Hello! Thanks for visiting Soytastic Candle Creations! I have always loved making candles. It all started when I received a candle making kit about 10 years ago. I made one candle and I was hooked! I wanted to try more scents, more molds, more dyes and so it began... One day while I was browsing the craft shop I noticed this wax that was in flake form. I thought it was interesting as the wax I ordered always came as a hard slab. It turned out that this was soy wax! I thought ah, soy wax, how cool! |
I purchased the soy wax and fell in love with it! As I didn't have a area dedicated to making candles in it was easier to work with soy because the melting temperature was lower, that I could melt the wax in the microwave. Soon I was making candles every weekend! I began to buy more scents and dyes and play around to find the best combinations of wax, dye and scent. I really got into candle making so I began to look around for the best soy wax, dye, scent, molds, etc. There was a lot of good information online but I found that what I really needed to do was test different waxes, dyes, and scents together to find one I was satisfied with. There was so much to test! I tested about 5 different waxes before finding one that I was pleased with. It was a lot of trial and error such as making sure the wax was compatible with the scent, and then the dye, etc. I also had to test wicks, and find the best scent throw, and all those sorts of things. It was a lot of work and frustrations at times and I had many failed attempts at making a nice candle. Anyways I found out that there is no right way to make a soy candle, there may be step by step instructions but it's up to the candle maker through trial and error to determine what works. |
So when people ask me how to make a soy candle I don't know where to start. I can give you the suggested temperatures for such things like when to add dye, scent, pour into the mold, etc but I cannot tell you how to make your perfect soy candle as that is up to you. However ,I do love trouble shooting and if you are working your way along and find a problem I might be able to help. I could tell you how to wick a mold but not what wick to use as I still mess that up after 5 years of testing! I have found that soy is a very particular wax. From my experience I have found that unlike paraffin which works with mostly any scent and dye, soy is picky. My best advice would be to begin by following the instructions the manufacturer of your chosen wax has provided for making candles and then test away till it is to your perfection. I cannot tell you which brand soy wax to use as I have found it depends on preference. I still find myself testing new scents and dyes and on the rare occasion waxes. What I have found works best though is to keep a diary of everything you test and record the outcome, that way when you've found something that works it can be easily reproduced. Also price is not a indication of anything. Just because the scent is more expensive does not mean it's better quality. That is my short story as to how my soy candles came to be. |
